Over omgaan met de moeilijke geschiedenis van zwarte en niet-Westerse groepen.

Kan een duistere geschiedenis vol wantrouwen en gaten met rust gelaten worden? Kan geschiedenis sterven? Geschiedenis is feilbaar en wordt vaak gedomineerd door de winnaars. Wat gebeurt er wanneer een bepaalde geschiedenis wordt verzwegen?

Choreograaf en danser Ligia Lewis bespreekt in Still Not Still de zware geschiedenis van zwarte en niet-Westerse gemeenschappen. De uitsluiting van deze groepen in het verleden wordt behandeld in een choreografie vol zwarte humor en surrealistische beelden. Zeven performers spelen in een stilstaande wereld, waarin kritisch wordt gekeken naar de fantasie over historische vooruitgang.

In deze voorstelling doet Lewis een poging om naast het verleden te gaan staan, en bekijkt hoe het ons nu beïnvloedt. Ze behandelt ons schandelijke koloniale verleden en de alledaagse werkelijkheid die door het Black Lives Matter-movement werd onthuld. Ze confronteert het publiek met onze illusies over een ‘post-class’ en ‘post-race’ samenleving. Lewis spreekt vanuit het midden van het zogenaamde progressieve westen, en haar conclusie is direct gericht op de mensen om haar heen; ze legt de dagelijkse hypocrisie bloot en haalt ons uit onze veilige cirkel.

Ligia Lewis presenteert op op SPRING 2023 niet één, maar twee voorstellingen. A Plot/ A Scandal speelt na Still Not Still op 26 en 27 mei in de Blauwe Zaal

On coping with the difficult history of black and non-Western communities

Can a history full of bad faith and gaps be left to the past? Can history die? Since history is fallible, and often determined by the victors, what might emerge when it is laid to rest?
In Still Not Still, choreographer and dancer Ligia Lewis deals with the heavy history of black and non-Western communities. The exclusion of these groups in the past is covered in a dance full of dark humor and surrealist imagery. Seven performers play in a world at a standstill, in which the fantasy of historical progress is critically looked at.

In this performance, Lewis makes an attempt to step to the side of the difficult past, and examines how it influences us now. She highlights the shameful straight lines from the hidden scandal of the colonial past, to the contemporary scandal of everyday reality disclosed by the BLM movement. She confronts the audience with our illusions about a „post-class” and „post-race” contemporary society. Lewis speaks straight from the middle of the so-called progressive West, and her diagnosis is directed straight onto the people around her, exposing everyday hypocrisy, and knocking us out from our liberal comfort.

At SPRING 2023, Ligia Lewis presents not one, but two works. A Plot / A Scandal plays after Still Not Still, on the 26th and 27th of May.
