Dries Verhoeven
“Ze zullen komen, ze zullen niet anders kunnen, ze komen met tienduizenden, ze komen met miljoenen.” Met groeiend onbehagen las Dries Verhoeven over de toekomstige Afrikaanse vluchtelingenstroom. Terwijl het pessimisme in Europa bijna voelbaar is en we onszelf voorbereiden op een angstaanjagende toekomst, vroeg hij zich af: “Waar gaat die gigantische groep mensen heen, in de voorspelde post-apocalyptische wereld? “
Om hier een antwoord op te vinden, vloog Verhoeven naar Lagos, Nigeria, een overvolle stad in een drukbevolkt land. Daar trof hij een energiek en optimistisch volk. Een groter contrast met de Europese zorgen leek nauwelijks denkbaar. Hieruit volgde zijn nieuwe performance Dear beloved friend, een live filmvoorstelling vanuit Nollywood waarbij de performers van Kininso Koncepts onze Europese nachtmerries tot leven brengen. Via een internetverbinding schetsen de Nigerianen een toekomst waarin Afrikaanse vluchtelingen massaal naar Europa migreren. Wat zegt dit toekomstbeeld over onze kijk op onszelf, op Europa en onze relatie met Afrika? Zijn deze migranten louter toekomstige vluchtelingen, of zijn het ook onze toekomstige ziekenverzorgers, onze bedpartners, onze leiders?

“They will come, they will have no choice, they will come in their tens of thousands, in their millions..” As he read about the future of African refugees and the expected population boom on the continent, Dries grew increasingly uneasy. As the pessimism in Europe is almost palpable and we prepare ourselves for a terrifying future, Verhoeven wondered: “Where will this enormous group of people go, in the predicted post-apocalyptic world? “
To find answers, Verhoeven flew to Lagos, Nigeria, a crowded city in a packed country. There, he met the most energetic and optimistic citizens. A greater contrast to the European concerns seemed inconceivable. This led to his new performance Dear Beloved Friend, a live film performance from Nollywood, in which the performers of Kininso Koncepts bring the European nightmares to life. Via a live internet connection, the Nigerians paint a picture of a future in which African refugees migrate en masse to Europe. Driving, disruptive and inescapable, like the future itself. What does this vision of the future say about our view of ourselves, of Europe and our relationship with Africa? Are these migrants mere future refugees, or are they also our future caregivers, our bed partners, our leaders?
